Smartphones help people stay in touch during floods


Many parts of the UK have been affected by the torrential rain and flooding over the last few days. Even under these challenging weather conditions, members of the UK’s largest married dating site have still been able to log on to check their messages and let their lovers know that they are ok. The site has seen the number of visits from mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets increase considerably in the areas worst affected.

This month has seen some of the worst floods of the year in many areas of the country. According to a Downing Street spokesman 300 properties were flooded in just 24 hours in England and Wales alone, and over 1000 homes have now been flooded. In St Asaph in North Wales the River Elwy rose to 6ft above its normal level with disastrous effects.

Rosie Freeman-Jones Spokesperson for said: “It has been a nasty few days weather-wise and we wish to extend our sympathies to all those who have been affected by the extreme weather conditions. But thankfully due to the rise in the number of people having smart phones members have been able to access the site and send and receive messages.”

In the last year the UK has shown a large increase in smartphone usage from 30 to 45% of the total population. Also the study by google found that the demographics of smartphone owners are shifting, smartphone ownership has risen sharply for those aged over 45.

Conditions like this highlight our reliance on the internet and communication tools that we have come to take for granted, thanks to the rise in tablet computing and smartphone usage people are still able to stay in contact no matter the weather.
