Horrible karaoke, second hand embarrassment, and an illicit relationship with a colleague – the office Christmas party has it all.
An annual survey of over 1,000 people on IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people and the leading authority on infidelity, found that 18% of those surveyed cheated with a colleague at the office Christmas party.
To be specific, 45% admitted to kissing a colleague, 66% seductively danced with one, while a whopping 77% flirted with one. 6% even admitted to going all the way and had sex with a colleague, while 4% had sex with their boss.
The site’s spokesperson, Christian Grant, explains:
“The combination of good drinks and good vibes creates a scenario that’s ripe for cheating; whether that manifests itself as something as innocent as a bit of flirting or a full-blown affair is another story.
“Maybe you’ve always found your colleague attractive, and a little bit of alcohol is all that was needed for you to cross the line.
“Unfortunately, sleeping with a colleague can be more damaging in the long run than cheating with a stranger on a night out, or even with someone you meet online.
“Once the hangover disappears, the reality of your actions will sink in, and you’ll have to return to work in the coming days and weeks and confront your colleague one way or another – you’ll never be able to look them in the eye the same way again, that’s for sure.”
And the ramifications could be even worse for some, as 18% admitted to telling their boss exactly what they thought of them at the office Christmas party, with a further 14% admitting to having a shared a secret that they shouldn’t have.
“This almost always ends badly,” said Grant.
“At best, your boss will dismiss – or forget – your drunken ramblings. At worst, you’ll be in for a stern talking to the next day; you have absolutely nothing to gain.
“While the Christmas party is intended to be fun, it’s important to maintain a semblance of professionalism if you can.”
