  • 2016 was the biggest year for affairs in the UK, new research has revealed
  • A record-breaking amount of married people (over 100,000) joined married-dating website IllicitEncounters.com in search of an affair
  • Interestingly, the majority of those (55%) were women, dispelling the myth that men sleep around to get notches on their bedpost and praise from their friends
  • The biggest cheating days of the year were May 21st, July 10th, July 22nd and November 18th
  • With less and less people getting married (and therefore having less to lose), 2017 is expected to be an even bigger year for affairs in the UK

2016 saw more affairs on record than any ever before, new research has revealed. Over 100,000 married people joined IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people and the leading authority on infidelity, during from January 1st to December 19th 2016, with more people engaging in illicit affairs than in any other year since 2003; this was up by almost 10,000 people on the previous year.

Interestingly, more woman than men went in search of an affair in 2016, making up 55% of all registrations in 2016 so far.

Keeping with women, over 30% of all female sign ups came from women between the ages of 31 – 40, while 22% were aged 21 – 30.

A further 19% were 41 – 50 years old, 15% were between the ages of 51 – 60, with the remaining 14% being over the age of 60.

Men between the ages of 31 – 40 also proved to be popular, making up 35% of all sign ups in 2016. 20% were between the ages of 41 – 50, 17% between the ages of 51 – 60, with 13% being between the ages of 21 – 30; the remaining 15% were aged 60 and over.

The most popular days for affairs in 2016 were May 21st, July 10th, July 22nd and November 18th.

May 21st and July 10th represented the two single biggest days of the year for female sign ups, with husbands around the country seemingly abandoning their wives to watch the FA Cup and Euro 2016 finals respectively.

July 22nd was the biggest day of affairs for the summer, with adulterers having one last summer fling before jetting off on holiday with their family.

Similarly, November 18th represented the final and biggest day for adulterers to cheat before the year’s end, with the Christmas festivities and familial responsibilities taking priority in the weeks afterward.

The site’s spokesperson, Christian Grant, expands:

“With more women looking to cheat than men, especially those between the ages of 21 – 30, it goes some way to dispelling the myth that blokes, especially young ones, sleep around to get notches on their bedpost and high fives from their mates – it seems that women are far worse.

“The stats also show that anyone of any age is susceptible to an affair. While recent research from the Office for National Statistics has shown a decrease in the amount of people getting divorced, the amount of people getting married has also significantly decreased.

“Part of that is down to the alarming lack of commitment shown by some couples – why would you want to get married if you’re wary of your partner cheating? Unfortunately, that starts a vicious cycle; it’s easier to cheat if you’re not married, because you’ve got so much less to lose.

“There’s no worry about who gets what from the fallout of a divorce, whether that’s the house, money or custody of the children, because the prospect of divorce doesn’t exist. That’s why we can say with a great degree of certainty that we expect to see even more people having affairs in 2017.”
