You’ve been warned! More couples split in the week leading up to Valentine’s day than any other day of the year with Red Tuesday (Tuesday 8th February) the most popular day to get dumped. Will your relationship survive?
38% of people have broken up with their significant other in the week leading up to Valentine’s day. With a whopping 46% of those ditching their partners on Red Tuesday. A further 8% have actually called it quits on Valentine’s day itself – savage.
Results come from a new survey of 1800 members of IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people.
The most popular way to throw in the towel was by text message 30% followed by breaking up in-person 26%.

You only really need 140 characters to break someone’s heart as 14% claim to have ditched their partner via social media.
4% of people didn’t even deliver the news themselves. Opting instead to get a friend or relative to do it on their behalf – don’t shoot the messenger.

Florence, 35, Devon, a member using the site said ‘I think there’s a lot of pressure leading up to the day that makes you question whether you even want to celebrate your relationship, least of all be in it. With it being so early on in a new year I think you start having revelations about each other as early as January and any doubts increase in intensity leading up to February reaching that crescendo a week before.’
Jessica Leoni, sex and relationships expert at IllicitEncounters.com, said ‘Love is in the air! But not for everyone. The lead-up to Valentine’s day can be tense – it’s likely we’ve all either dumped or been dumped this week in the past so a little anxiety today is only natural. It’s better to pull that band-aid quickly than delay hurting someone. You’ve got to be cruel to be kind. As many of us revel in the romance of the week ahead, spare a thought for the hordes of people mending broken hearts today.’
